Career Assessment Advice
"I have enjoyed greatly the second blooming that comes when you finish the life of the emotions; and suddenly find - at the age of fifty, say - that a whole new life has opened before you, filled with things you can think about, study, or read about...It is as if a fresh sap of ideas and thoughts was rising in you." Quote by Agatha Christie
So here you are. At that stage in your career when many are telling you that your best years are behind you, you should be coasting to retirement etc etc. BUT you know you still have a lot to offer. You've learned a lot over the years. But where to use it ? And aren't you thinking of doing something different anyway ? For many years now we have been espousing the virtues of "second" and even "third" careers. Many factors are now making this a reality
- Many people will have to carry on earning to supplement their pensions
- Peoples' savings have been severely eroded by the financial crisis
- Interest rates have fallen to the lowest level for decades
- The cost of children ( and grandchildren's ) education has skyrocketed
- Many people want to carry on doing a useful job/s anyway
Research from Careers Advice Service found that:
- Half (46%) of 50-plus adults in the UK say they are not too old to find their dream job and start a new career
- Almost half (45%) of adults have more life goals they want to achieve now than when they were 30
- One in five (19%) 50-plus workers are seriously contemplating a career change to fulfil a lifetime career ambition.
- More than a quarter (26%) want more job satisfaction in their next career move.
- For 77% that means doing something "worthwhile"
- 61% of 50-plus workers want the chance to learn new skills.
- One in six (16%) retired 50-plus adults want to learn a new skill
