Should the government do more to assist people over 50 to find work?

As we 'baby boomers' make up the biggest numbers in society, how come this is not reflectd in the workforce?
If we outnumber the youngsters and have more purchasing power and financial clout, how come we dont have a louder voice?
As a 'generation', we have not traditionally been so passive in the past...
It is so up to us to press for real biting legal intervention...perhaps based on percentages (as 'relay' sugests three tiers) 1/3 of (18-25), 1/3 of (25-45) 1/3 of(45-65) and each company must show that it has an even mix...
Sadly companies like the BBC continue to relflect this descrimination, and mainly directed at females and we pay for this insult!!!
We need to let these companies know who their paymaster is. And was that once not 'he who payed the piper' ?

I think they should look at the issues the over 50's jobseekers face and probably the best assistance would be to raise awareness of the positive aspects to employing someone from the over 50's sector.

Our age group have this negative image of workers unwilling to learn new jobs or difficult to manage but it simple isn't true... I would say I am more reliable and harder working than other employee's half my age... I have more experience... less emotional distractions or outside responsibilities effecting my work.

I think the Government needs to do more to combat ageism generally and not just in relation to jobs. We still write-off older people across the board and this presents a pretty gloomy future for all of us as we get older. We need a more positive and optimistic approach to older age drawing on the issues that Molly34 raises in her posting.

The word ageism should be taken out of the vocabulary. It tends to symbolise rejection and a person being " past their sell by date "
There should be a concerted effort, not just by Government, but by employers to develop the concept of first second and third careers according to a person's age. Most of the working population in the UK will have to work past the " official " retirement age, because pension provision is appallingly bad. Time for an in depth look and a strategy
